Data Science Icon – Honorary Mention: MARGOT GERRITSEN, Professor Emerita at Stanford University, Co-founder of the non-profit organization Women in Data Science Worldwide
Margot Gerritsen earned a master's degree in applied mathematics from Delft University of Technology but pursued her scientific career in the United States, affiliating with Stanford University, where she earned a doctorate in computational mathematics. Her professional experiences also include several years at the University of Auckland (New Zealand), where she worked as a lecturer. She dedicated most of her career to computational sciences and engineering. In her scientific work, she designed computational tools for various applications, including energy resources, ocean modeling, sustainable development, and data science. In 2015, she founded Women in Data Science – first (2015) as a conference organized on the campus of Stanford University and now as a global non-profit organization, benefiting thousands of people in 160 countries worldwide from its initiatives!
Applied Business Data Science: NATALIA BARANOWSKA, Section Lead for Data Analytics & Insights, Roche
Experienced leader with IT experience in pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and healthcare, including 12 years of managing global IT teams in healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. Experienced in Medical Device software and implementing strategic changes in organization and technology, project and program management, building effective teams, and creating an international and innovative work culture. Since joining Roche in 2018, she has held managerial positions in various data processing units of the company focusing on developing the Data FAIRness and Data Science ecosystem in Roche.
Applied Business Data Science: EWA NOWAKOWSKA, Partner, EY AI Lab Leader, EY Poland
Built from scratch a unique team, EY AI Data Science, advising on effective use of data, technology, and implementation of cutting-edge AI solutions internally and for EY clients. Currently, the team helps transform businesses in various sectors in the largest organizations in Poland and Europe. The team focuses on delivering applications along with technological capabilities: from data science through AI to genAI solutions that currently dominate. Recently opened AI Lab leader.
Data Science Education: EWA KRYGER, Founder, Art Hacks AI
Characterized by a unique combination of artistic soul with solid roots as a Data Scientist, seasoned with communication skills and understanding of the dynamics of diverse teams. Works as a people-oriented Delivery Manager during the day, transforms into her art-driven alter ego after hours, pondering the impact of artificial intelligence on art in the future. Conducts workshops facilitating team building through artistic meditation. Seeks opportunities to share her knowledge as a mentor (Hack4change, Hack4react, Omdena, AI4Good, Dare IT) and bring benefits to local communities in various ways, including using new technologies and promoting women in every field, especially in AI. Co-founder of Women in Machine Learning & Data Science Tricity and founder of Art Hacks AI foundation.
Data Science Education: AGNIESZKA KAMIŃSKA, Data Scientist, OLX Group
Data Scientist with research experience in cognitive neuroscience and brain research. Currently works in the Data Science team at OLX Group, specializing in information processing and optimization of search result sorting. After hours, she leads the Poznań branch of the international non-profit group Women in Machine Learning & Data Science. Together with the team, she builds a diverse community of individuals engaged in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and broadly understood data science. Through social activities, she contributes to increasing the visibility and supporting the professional development of women and other minorities in the DS/ML/AI industry.
Data Science Ethics: DOTA SZYMBORSKA, CEO, New Technologies Ethics
Holder of two master's degrees in philosophy (with a specialization in logic) and sociology (applied social sciences) obtained at the University of Warsaw. Academic (lectures at WSB Merito in Warsaw) and educator, as well as a TEDx speaker (ethics of autonomous vehicles). Currently engaged in pioneering research on the integration of artificial intelligence in education and explores the aesthetics of virtual reality (VR), conducting an independent seminar on ethics in AI. Since March 2024, an active member of GRAI, the AI working group at the Ministry of Digitization. Co-created a series of webinars for judges, explaining the operation of algorithms used in sentencing.
Data Science for Good: BEATA LATOS, Data Analyst, Typhoon Research Center
Beata Latos specializes in extreme weather phenomena and their forecasting. In 2023, she successfully completed her doctoral studies at the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, focusing on understanding and predicting extreme weather phenomena in developing countries, including tropical cyclones. Currently working as a researcher and data analyst at the Typhoon Research Center in South Korea, where she uses artificial intelligence to deepen knowledge about the formation and intensification of tropical cyclones. She is a dedicated advocate of human and animal rights, as well as environmental protection.
Data Science for Good: KINGA STRYSZOWSKA-HILL, Data Scientist, SmartCover
With academic experience (after obtaining a doctorate, she taught and conducted research at several universities, specializing in wetland ecosystems), her passion for analysis led her to pursue a career in data science. She succeeds as a data scientist in technology companies dealing with monitoring rainwater and sewage flow to prevent floods and protect public health.
Data Science Research: AGNIESZKA MIKOŁAJCZYK-BAREŁA, Senior AI Engineer, Chaptr
A scientist, programmer, and AI expert with over a decade of experience in the industry. Currently working as a Senior AI Engineer developing large language models at Chaptr. Previously, as an NLP Team Leader at Voicelab.AI, she led a team that created the TRURL solution. Actively involved in the academic environment: led the HearAI projects, focused on sign language modeling, and the Detect Waste project for detecting waste in the natural environment, as well as supported the "Zuzanka" project aimed at detecting and reading product expiration dates to help the blind. She defended her doctoral dissertation at the Gdańsk University of Technology on the detection and reduction of errors and biases in data and AI models, one of the fundamental ethical aspects in artificial intelligence.
Data Science Research: EWA SZCZUREK, Director of the AI for Health Institute
She leads the AI for Health Institute at Helmholtz Munich in Germany, is a professor at the Institute of Informatics, Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics at the University of Warsaw, and runs a joint research laboratory at both institutions. She was a visiting associate professor at Northwestern University in the United States (2023) and a visiting fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Bielefeld, Germany (2016). She holds master's degrees in computer science from the University of Warsaw (2006) and Uppsala University (2005). She obtained her doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin (2011) and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Switzerland at ETH Zurich. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence, particularly on probabilistic graphical models and deep generative models, and their applications in computational medicine. Her specific applications include oncology, pulmonology, and AI-based peptide design, for which she recently received an ERC Consolidator Grant.
Data Science Rising Star: MAJA TRĘBACZ, OpenAI
Maja Trębacz is an outstanding research engineer specializing in training large language models using human feedback. At Google DeepMind, she held important roles in developing innovative technologies such as Gemini, Sparrow, and GopherCite, significantly contributing to advances in conversational artificial intelligence. Currently, she works at OpenAI in San Francisco, where she faces new challenges in research on artificial intelligence and data. Her publication record includes works in artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and bioinformatics.
